I think it's just a case of less wear and tear on the track structure. It's not like they're running long distance high priority trains like perishables or UPS, etc. I'm pretty sure I was told the track back when I was dispatching was actually rated for 60 MPH, but they held it to 50. At one time they did run 60 MPH. I remember an engineer telling me you really had to be on your toes to run that fast in that particular territory! Even during my tenure, trains over 7000 tons or 160 cars were restricted to 35 MPH. We met that tonnage often, but never that train length! Everyone got nervous even if we combined a couple of grain trains to make 130 cars! Many trains were restricted to around 80 cars to be able to fit in sidings and keep the RR fluid.
