It's dark, yes, but well written and well acted. To this day it's one of my favorite storylines from any TV show. It's also the last time the Spencer vs Cassadine story was consistently well done.
Laura's reaction is true to history though. The "seduction" rewrite happened during the Sticky Doors era. There's a scene where Laura and Luke are at the floating rib and she says that the first time her and Luke "made love" was on the floor of the campus disco. TG likewise played Luke with a perplexed look then too. That rewrite stood for nearly 20 years.
By 1998 this show REALLY needed to rectify that, and as a younger viewer who didn't see the original story live I'm glad they did. The whole seduction rewrite had aged so poorly by the late 90s and it was irresponsible, IMO, for the show to let that stand. I'm glad they didn't.
I think Genie did really great work at portraying a woman who had buried that incident, the darkest part of their history, and Tony did great work playing a man who not only could never forget, but on some level was always waiting to pay for the horror of what he did to the person he loved more than anything in existence.
