Yes! Though he was nominated twice before, Tony would win his first 90s Emmy for this material.
It’s so good I watched the whole monologue again today.
Some interesting trivia:
When this originally aired they let the whole, nearly 10 minute monologue play uninterrupted. No cuts to other scenes, no commercial break.
The man who directed the original rape scene was hired back to direct him in this monologue. He still had his original notes nearly 20 years later.
This is such powerful drama. JJ is terrific. I'm watching him digest the brilliant work being done in front of him by the master. It's especially sweet to know that the two of them have such a loving relationship in real life. Wonderful work all around with such sensitive writing. Didn't Tony receive an Emmy for this?
Last night we finally arrived at the moment where Luke faces his greatest fear.
Over 20 years later, and it’s still one of the most powerful moments in Daytime history.
I will tell you that this revisit is a breath of fresh air for my wife. She fell in love with LnL despite the rape, but she found the later seduction rewrite to be both terrible and pointless. She glad so far to see the show finally acknowledging it again.
