What exactly hooked us about him, Rose? I think it was his obsessive yearning for her. I just felt that he was the root-for underdog. I sympathized with him. I certainly was a Laura/Scott fan before he came on the scene. However, once he arrived, it was clear that Scott was a bore compared to Luke.
I sat up when Nasty Luke showed up! By the time he "met" Laura I was hooked. I was watching him at Laura/Scott's wedding. I was pulling for Luke early in the game. I wish we had more video of the lead up to her working in the disco to re watch but thankful we have what we have. I wish the writers could embrace a Happy Marriage for the long run. Doesn't mean there aren't rough times/ years but there could be family, work, social problems they experience together..And work through, mostly united. But no one cares about my opinion..I'm past the age for demographics.
Nothing is more boring in the soap world than a happily married couple. They certainly would have had to give Laura and Scott some type of controversy. I never would have expected that a character like Luke would come between them...at least not at the beginning. As time went on, though, it became obvious that Scotty's protectiveness was going to be smothering to her. No one expected Luke to take off on the popularity scale. He was really nasty at the beginning. However, they didn't bank on TG. He made every scene worth watching. He electrified the show. What began as a small insignificant character became the center stage. That happens sometimes when an actor gets a role that perfectly suits them. Then it is like sitting on a rocket. I think that happened for both Genie and Tony in Luke and Laura.
Meanwhile, I can't bear to watch Genie on GH without Tony. At least when Genie was absent, they parked Laura in an institution so that she was unavailable. Luke is out there somewhere, and I don't want to imagine that Laura has just moved on. They should bring back Luke to be killed off even if they need a stand-in to do it. Then we can all truly move on.
We agree. They needed each other, he helped her grow up, spread her wings and he definitely needed (needs) her. They are still my couple, still my favorite story (I just have to re write everything after Lulu was born in my head). btw a new couple moved in to our 'hood and the wife is my daughter's age, her husband is at least 12-15 years older (his daughter from a prior marriage is 10 yrs younger than her), once you meet them you realize what a perfect couple they are.. oh and re Scott, when he married Laura I thought he loved her but during the year of her marriage I stopped thinking that. He didn't really know her, which is how he lost her. Can you imagine how her life would have proceeded w/o Luke? She would have eventually self destructed.
Funny... I'm a year older than Tony, but I never saw Luke as too old for Laura. Maybe it was his energy or the Afro hairstyle, but he did seem to be a good bit younger than the 33 years he was when Luke was paired with Laura. Kin Shriner was a good bit younger than Tony, but Scott seemed older. He tried to parent Laura...something she DIDN'T want. Scott was more settled and directed. Luke was adrift. Luke needed Laura, and Scott did not. What a fabulous story!
I am older than Genie and although I thought she as too young to get married to Scott, I reminded myself, my grandparents were that age. I turned 18 in college and although my boyfriend was a few years older, I knew guys in law school that dated my friend..I never thought about lnl’s ages until I had a 17 yr old. They still are the exception, perfect for each other until The writers wrote the destruction.

Could you have or did you relate to a man of 25 or 30 the way Laura did? Despite her not having that much life experience, she spoke to Luke on an equal level (as we mention quite often). There was no way in the world I would have been able to talk to, much less have romantic feelings for someone that age. I wouldn't have been able to go near them. I wouldn't have been comfortable at all with someone that age pursuing me. I'm glad Gloria Monty did it all slowly.
Age wasn't the focus back then, I doubt it would be done this way today (but I'm sure glad they did)!
The actor Paul Walker who died in the car crash was dating his girlfriend when he was 33 and she was 16. That was real life and it gave me the creeps.
