I think it made him a star. AS I remember, he had a hairdresser at the show who helped him transform Luke from a definite bad guy to a gray character...bad guy with a good heart. The hairdresser said that with proper lighting, the hairstyle would make him look like he had a halo like a Botticelli angel. A fro was a popular hairstyle then, and lots of men wore it. It seemed to give Tony balance. He was a tall guy, and this made him appear even taller. he was very thin early on, and the hairstyle seemed to give him more volume. It also hid a receding hairline. it must have been a pain to undergo perms and hair dryers. But one day he appeared with that hairstyle with no explanation, and not long after that, he stole the heart of America.

I’ve always wondered about Luke’s change in hairstyle.
How was it introduced on the show? Did any characters make reference to it?
Was this Gloria’s or Tony’s idea?
The only time I’ve seen Tony address it was in an interview where, in typical Tony fashion, he said something like “I spent way too much time in curlers in The 80s” 😀
