Regarding Pete Seeger: one of the highlights of my musical journey was meeting Pete Seeger backstage after his concert at The Eastman Theatre, here in Rochester, New York, back in Movember 1964. Now, because of your posting, I realize that it was just two years after his sentence was overturned. Of course, being only 14 years old at the time, I hadn't known about or followed any of the decade-long events leading up to Pete's concert. My brother Andy took me to the concert, and I do remember him saying that Pete was a Communist, which kind of shocked me, given what that meant in the context of that time.
Anyway, it was an excellent concert, and Pete featured a three-song segment by Delta blues legend Son House, who had just been rediscovered here in Rochester by Dick Waterman. After the concert, I went through the backstage fan line twice and got Pete's autograph in my copy of his book How to Play the 5-string Banjo. The second time through the line, I asked Pete if I could shake his hand, and he graciously offered it. Wonderful memories!
