The collection out grew the family mansion, so he and a few of his buddies of the same tax bracket, decided to open a museum.
One of these gents had a vacant building in Oklahoma City and it got started there. The smartest move they made was to bring in Johnny Baier, to be the curator.
Johnny is one of the premier tenor banjo players on the planet as well as being a life long student of ALL things banjo.
John is meticulous on all aspects of his career and he's done a wonderful job with the museum.
He , is also a very realistic thinker. The tenor and plectrum banjos of the past are wonderful, to a particular group. That group has mostly passed on and while still the cat's meow for some, the hey day has come and gone.
I spoke with Greg Deering a time or two he tells me 95% OF their business is for 5 string banjo's.
Realizing this fact, the banjo museum has opened it's arms to the much more popular 5 string. The first inductee to the ABM hall of fame was Earl Scruggs. The museum has one of Earls instruments on display . They also have one of Dave Guards 5 string long neck Vega's as well as an entire display honoring our Kingston Trio. The list goes on.
In 2018 , when my Father was inducted into the Hall of Fame, my wife and I were there for the induction ceremony. It was quite an event. In that same year, Bela Fleck was the inductee for the 5 string category. Got to shoot the breeze with him. A humble gentlemen, who had a respectful interest in my Father's instruments and career. I think it was Will Rogers who once said "I never met a banjo I didn't like" .... I'm with Will!

One of the most valuable banjos ever. I'd say it's a toss up between it and the one that Terry's dad played on "I'm Looking Over A Four Leaf Clover."
Someone who posts on this Facebook page might be the owner of the Silver Bell plectrum that Bob played on Tom Dooley.
