What’s your favorite Kingston Trio album?
I don’t think anyone has listed Something Else.
But, there have people who have listed … I’d all the others.
For me … it’s always been #16
For two reasons … I think.
The biggest on has to be timing.
It came out in March of 1963
Shortly after the start of my freshman year of college.
I had great years when I was 13 and 14.
Shitty years afterward until my freshman year of college.
This cycle lasted until midway into my sophomore year when my life blew up.
(long story … you don’t want to hear it)
I have a story to go along with my getting EVERY trio album.
The one for #16 isn’t that great.
I went to a movie at the Ben Ali Theater in Lexington on a Friday night.
Shackelton’s was right next to the theater.
They sold pianos, other musical instruments, including Martin Guitars and records.
Standing in line … to get in the movie …. in the window … there it was.
The store was closed.
I went there Saturday morning …. brought it home and did nothing the entire day but play it.
This album was different.
It had a completely different sound.
The most noticeable one to my ears …. The fidelity seemed better.
Second …. The blend of songs seemed much better.
The songs seemed very different from the ones from the past.
Looking back … it probably had the best bunch of Stewart’s songs.
Glen Campbell had a big hand in the entire album….
I think he was a kinda co-producer.
There’s really no telling how much his voice and guitar is on the album.
But, I think what was so hard hitting about this album was the cover.
This was …. I think …. The first WHITE album.
It blew me away the first time I saw it.
It still does.
We are now living in very cramped quarters.
No room for any albums or CDs. They’re all boxed up.
I haven’t seen that album … in the flesh for years.
The sight of it …. Sent chills.
All of that was soooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Long ago.
It’s gotten to be a daily thought.
So many things in the past.
I was driving home yesterday after going to VA to see my doctor for my check-up.
She said I was OK.
Always a relief.
Out of the corner of my eye … I spotted an old red corvette.
Maybe a 1954.
I don’t think there are many of them that at one time or another …..
That I haven’t seen them all.
So, I kept driving.
But, a few miles down the road …..
I said, “What the heck and turned around.”
Just when I got there … a guy was loading it up on a carrier.
I took a bunch of pictures of it with my phone.
The guy that was loading it liked to talk.
He told me everything about the car and its owner.
2nd owner… has had it for 40 years.
Bought it at an auction in Phoenix.
Lives a few blocks away.
After getting plenty of photos of it I went back and got in my car.
Thought for a minute.
Said to the driver …. “Mind if I follow you …. I want to meet the owner.”
He said, “OK.”
And, I did.
Fellow by the name of Rick.
He told me all about the car.
In his garage … was the exact same orngish red new Corvette.
One of those new monsters.
Said he was 77 and his daughter wants him to sell his cars.
Told me I could have it for a reasonable price.
I told him I’d get it from him as soon as I won the Lottery.
Here’s the exact car.
