I had always thought that Johhny Cash played a jumbo Gibson guitar as his main instrument, and there are a number of pics with him playing a flame topped model of the same. I noticed though that there are plenty of pictures of Cash playing Martin D28 syled guitars, including one here:

Lest we forget - before he became megastar, Cash frequently performed with at most one supporting guitarist (or none at times) and a bass player.

In his early Days, Luther Perkins played lead guitar for Johnny, with a Fender tele, and Marshall (??) was the bass player. Johnny used a plethora of different guitars over the years. On a very early LP, which I still have, there's a photo of a Gibson J 200, with Johnny's name inlaid on the fret board. I've seen him, in more than one instance playing a red sunburst Guild acoustic. I've also seen him with Fender, dred style acoustic. This may be the one that he spray painted Black and somehow gave away to a fan, during one of his....adventures. (Or not). Once he began the "Man in Black" thing he had custom made Martin D 28's in black. Martin would later issue this as a Johnny Cash signature model. I have the Martin Pick, that would come with the J C signature guitar.
