For All John Denver Fans, and Susan for sure!
I've been a John Denver fan since his days with The Mitchell Trio. When he went solo, sometimes he was a bit over the top with his "Far Out!" stage manner, but his talent as a songwriter and performer always shone bright for me. I appreciated John more in the 1980s-1990s, when he "matured," which gave his music and stage persona a less frenetic and more dignified presence. I wish he hadn't bought that Rutan Long-EZ ...
Enjoy!
As it happens, the last two iterations of what started as the CMT both recorded versions of "Jet Plane." Both, by the way and not surprisingly to me, employed the copyrighted name with the comma - "Leaving, On A Jet Plane".
First, the last group to call itself the Mitchell Trio with Mike Kobluk, our late friend Fr. Joe Frazier, and John Denver:
As noted elsewhere, when Fr. Joe left and the group could no longer use "Mitchell" contractually, their last release and performing name was as Denver, Boise, and Johnson, the latter two being David Boise from Texas and Michael Johnson from Colorado. I claim the distinction of having opened for both in the summers of 1969 (for David Boise at a small Evanston ILL club called "It's Here") and in 1970 for Johnson (IIRC at the Earl of Old Town).
So here are Denver, Boise, and Johnson:
The YouTube uploader misidentifies the latter group as The Mitchell Trio - name already retired as above. I would add that though I have enjoyed these two tracks for years, I'm glad that Milt Okun (whom I interviewed a few years back - I'm really droppin' names like sandflies this morning! LOL!) suggested to JD that he could likely come up with a better arrangement - and he surely did.
BTW - I'm sure I misidentified something here, but it's 2:50am in Los Angeles and I think I'll wait for later in the morning to make corrections.
