Like THE KINGSTON TRIO and PETER, PAUL & MARY and THE BEATLES - those MITCHELL TRIO records are among my prized posessions.
Although I don't have all JOHN DENVER solo albums, I've got quite a few and for me personally,
his 4th album for RCA, entitled POEMS, PRAYERS & PROMISES, is John's best and the LP I keep going back to.
After JOHN DENVER and Annie divorced, he kept on with his music career while his former wife, Annie, became a Psychiatrist.
One day a patient named Judy (20) came to see Annie:
JUDY:
Didn't you used to be married to John Denver?
ANNIE:
Yes, but I don't want to talk about him. I want to talk about you.
JUDY:
This is about me. A few years ago I decided to end my life. When I got home from school, I went to my parent's room and took all of my Mom's sleeping pills.
Holding a tall glass of water in one hand and my Mom's pills in the other, I went into my bedroom, closing and locking the door.
It was too quiet, so I put the radio on and lay down in my bed. All of a sudden this song came on, "Poems, Prayers and Promises".
When I listened to its beauty, its calmness and simplicity, I didn't want to die anymore.

Thanks for your post, Ken. I'm a big John Denver fan who also enjoyed his days with the Chad Mitchell Trio.
As fate would have it they were supposed to record John's "Leaving On A Jet Plane" but for some reason Peter Paul & Mary grabbed it first.
Ironically, the song became PP&M's only #1 hit. (Puff The Magic Dragon & Blowin' In The Wind reached #2)
Though I pretty much love all of John Denver's songs, my all time favorite would have to be "Poems, Prayers & Promises."
Far Out! :>)

For All John Denver Fans, and Susan for sure!
I've been a John Denver fan since his days with The Mitchell Trio. When he went solo, sometimes he was a bit over the top with his "Far Out!" stage manner, but his talent as a songwriter and performer always shone bright for me. I appreciated John more in the 1980s-1990s, when he "matured," which gave his music and stage persona a less frenetic and more dignified presence. I wish he hadn't bought that Rutan Long-EZ ...
Enjoy!
