In my mind ... and even today....there were always 3 Bob Shanes.
There was the one that ended when Guard left the Trio.
There was the one that ended on June 17th... 1967
and the one I knew.
There is no question that Bob considered the REAL Kingston Trio to be the one with Guard.
I saw several indications of this.
Shane spoke of Guard several times when I was around him.
He never put it in these words .... but, he knew that the guy was a musical genius ... who was responsible for the Trio's success.
However, he never failed to add that the guy was a ....jerk.
The 3rd Shane was the one I knew who was always in the present.
I always greatly respected him for being able to live a good life after all the big fame and fortune was gone.
Bob knew exactly what had happened and what was going on.
I suspect that early on... while on the Perry Como show, or with Dina...someone told these guys the facts of life in the entertainment business and they got it.
That only in rare cases does it last.
I can tell you that Bob and Nick had pat answers for all of the questions.
They were VERY guarded about the truth.
I got this very fast and never asked them about the past.
Can you remember ANYTHING about the first time you saw the Trio?
My first time was in 1965 I think.
All that I remember is Bob kissing Nick at the end of the Shape of things.
I don't remember anything about the show .... except we went to the airport to greet them ... John rode from the airport to the hotel with me and my 2 buddies. My point about this is that by the time I got to know Shane, He had forgotten most of the kind of details that we'd like to know about. It was only natural for him to do this. We all just remember what we remember. Certain things stick in our minds and everything else goes by the wayside.
At the airport ... Nick had his Beatles Haircut.
It was gone at the show.
I talked to Shane after the show.
He was talking to 2 gals while I was in line waiting to talk to him....
One of the gals asked him where he was going next?
He said... "How about your place"
Everyone laughed.
Sane was serious.
I asked Shane about Guard....Several expletives followed.
In all the time I knew Shane .... I only asked him one question about the past.
He gave me the pat answer.
