I recently realized that it was 60 yrs. ago this summer that I attended the New York World's Fair. I had spent the 1st 6 weeks of that summer at Army ROTC summer camp so getting a decent summer job went out the window. That left most of Aug. pretty much free. Having lots of relatives in nearby Long Island made day or evening visits to the Fair convenient for me, my fiancée, and family.
One of the attractions we didn't get to was the Singer Bowl. It was a multi-purpose stadium donated by the Singer Sewing Company and hosted musical events, many of which were sparsely attended. One folk attraction was The New Christy Minstrels who filmed several performances at the Fair for their summer TV show. After the Fair closed, the venue was used over the next few years for musical events. The schedule for 1969 included a Folk Festival [see below]. By coincidence, the date of that show was the 2nd day of a music festival being held near the upstate NY town of Woodstock. The 1st day's concert included Tim Hardin, who apparently managed to get from Woodstock to Flushing Meadows in time for his performance. The Singer Bowl was converted in 1977 to the Louis Armstrong Memorial Stadium as part of the USTA Tennis Center. It was subsequently demolished in 2016.
