The undergraduate/faculty remark doesn't seem to have come from Alex. The Limes' website homepage here -

attributes it to Time Magazine, and that means likely author is Bruce Eder, who loved pop folk music as much as he loved the real trad stuff.

Sorry Rick. Alex Hassilev did in fact pass away last Sunday Morning, on April 21st, 2024. He was 90 years of age.
When asked about The Kingston Trio vs The Limeliters, Alex once told an interviewer:
"If the button-down scrubbed looking Kingston Trio were the undergraduates of big-time folk-singing; the Limeliters were the faculty."
