Speaking of Johnny Mathis, here's what he said after finally making it in show-biz:

"For the first 20 years of my life, I think, I sang with my eyes closed and fists clenched. Mostly, it didn't bother the people in the audience. but it did bother the critics.
So much so, I got horrible reviews. Terrible. They said he has no stage presence, "He's shy", and doesn't know what to do between songs.
Those reviews bothered me a great deal, but I learned to live with it. Then finally one day all the reviews became positive.
Funny thing is, I hadn't changed at all. It's just that they finally decided they liked what I'm doing."
