Another true 'story song' written by Bob Dylan (1963) had to do with a South Dakota farmer who became so overwhelmed by the desperation of poverty, ends up killing his wife, his three children, and then himself. Dylan originally called the song "The Rise and Fall of Hollis Brown".
Susan: "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol" tells the true story of the killing of a poor black woman in her fifties by William Zanzinger,
a wealthy white tobacco farmer in his twenties. Bob Dylan didn't waste any time giving us all the facts:
"William Zanzinger killed poor Hattie Carroll
With a cane that he twirled around his diamond ring finger
At a Baltimore Hotel society gathering..."
If ever a song can be described as timeless, Masters of War surely hits the mark. Bob Dylan at 21 had the ability to capture the spirit of a world gone wrong.
One of Dylan's best story songs was The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll.
