Never thought it would happen but, on Friday evening, my wife and I were able to see the Trio in its latest form. We are in St.John's,Nl so being so east (Ireland is the next stop if you want to keep going in that direction) and north, this was no insignificant opportunity. The Trio opened with "Hard Travellin'" and ended their encore with "This Land is your Land". In between there was (not in order) Everglades/Early Morning Rain/Green Back Dollar/Scotch and Soda/Hobo's Lullaby/Worried Man/Tijuana Jail/MTA/Tom Dooley/Reverend Mr Black/ Bad Man's Blunder/Where have all the flowers gone/Young Roddy M'Corley/A Man called Armstrong/I'm Going Home. All were well done, even Scotch and Soda and Hobo's Lullaby, although I thought doing Early Morning Rain in Canada was a brave undertaking as many Canadians view it as a Lightfoot song- full stop and end of story.
The audience average age was around 70 although that could have been on the low side ( I'm on the far side so not helping matters). I sensed that, compared to other audiences, it might have been harder for the Trio to get this audience to sing along. Nonetheless the audience was most appreciative with a standing ovation at the end. Great to hear the songs so well done even if there was a sense of loss of not hearing the voices of Bob/Nick/Dave/John. One of the most comfortable/enjoyable concerts we have attended and much better,IMO, than the last one with James Taylor/Jackson Browne. The banter with the audience understandably had a U.S. slant but the group was able to make it work with the Canadian audience so a well done to them. All in all, a great time.
