However it's not impossible for the 5 string to mimic the plectrum sound. Basically the plectrum started life as a 5 string with the drone string removed. Of course "Plectrum" is the hi falutton* word for ....pick. As in strum style.

Finger pickers and frailers can't get that kind of sound.
I don't know when Bob began to use a flat pick.
He didn't early on.
But, that sounds like flat picking to me.
That banjo playing is pure Dixieland banjo.
Terry Collins is the expert on this stuff.
He'll be able to tell in a heartbeat.
