It was indeed a fine gesture, but first, GL changed the lyric after he saw the actual church in 1985 from "musty old hall" to "rustic old hall" when parishioners took offense at the original description of their lovely and well-maintained sanctuary, built in 1849. Also, it has always been "Mariners' Church," never actually a cathedral.
As the song says..."In a musty old hall" Referring to the Mariner's Cathedral in Detroit. The bell rang 29 times, so the song goes. On the Monday after Gord's passing, the bell rang 30 times. A very nice gesture...
