First, I wanted to acknowledge Jim Moran's comments and observations below about our Canadian icon and treasure: GORDON LIGHTFOOT

As always, whatever Jim says, you could pretty much take it to the Bank. So why am I still broke?
(sorry Jim, I needed a laugh; I'm still trying to come to terms with Gordo's death on May 1st)

I started writing songs in High School. Eventually, I got some songs recorded by some major artists: (ie: Peter Paul & Mary: For Lovin Me and Early Morning Rain)...
mostly because I was out there performing. I was working in Coffee Houses and Lounges, and people came to see me and hear my material.

Our Canadian folksinging duo, Ian & Sylvia, helped get me get started and even named their third record album: "Early Morning Rain".
It was Ian Tyson who got me hooked up with United Artists Records.

My influence in the beginning must've been Bing Crosby because my parents would play his Christmas albums a lot. My love for music probably began then.

Everytime you wanted to do something, like writing a real good song and hoped it would score, you'd just keep trying and trying.
All of a sudden, something would come out of left field like "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (LP: Summertime Dream).

Nobody had any idea about that one.

LISA LaFLAMME:
Gordon, I'd like to ask you, if I may, about the people who come to see you at concerts. Do you have a favourite audience?

GORDON LIGHTFOOT:
In fact, I do, Lisa. I love performing for American audiences. I truly enjoy being in the United States.

LISA LaFLAMME:
What about here at home? Your Canadian audiences? (smiling)

GORDON LIGHTFOOT:
Yeah, they're pretty nice too. (hahaha)
