I love Judy Collins. The first time I heard her voice seems like a hundred years ago.
I was up north, staying at a friend's house by the lake, and the radio was playing the song: "Maid Of Constant Sorrow."
When I got back to Montreal and saw Judy's album "Maid Of Constant Sorrow" I just had to buy it !!!
Back in the day, I saved up a lot of money delivering newspapers (The Montreal Star) and doing odd-jobs around our neighbourhood....
and getting paid for it.
Without question, Max, there is a definite bond between Judy Collins and Canadians.
She often talks about it at concerts. I think it began with Judy's 6th studio album for Elektra Records: IN MY LIFE {rel: 1966}
Judy Collins had become friends with Montreal's beloved poet, Leonard Cohen, and recorded 2 of his songs on that album:
- Suzanne
- Dress Rehearsal Rag
Not only that...at some American Folk Festival (not Newport), in 1966, Judy encouraged Leonard Cohen to go on stage and sing "Suzanne".
Leonard slowly made his way to the microphone and began to sing....
"Suzanne takes you down to her place by the river, you can hear the boats go by, you can spend the night forever...I can't do this..."
and Leonard Cohen walked off the stage.
The crowd kept yelling: "Come Back Leonard; We Love You!" as they kept clapping their hands and stomping their feet.
Judy Collins witnessed Leonard Cohen shaking like a leaf, but to her credit, she grabbed his arm and marched him back onto the stage....
this time with BOTH Judy and Leonard singing "Suzanne."
Judy Collins put Leonard Cohen on the map !!!
Judy's connection to Canada didn't stop there. On her 7th album for Elektra Records: WILDFLOWERS {rel: 1967} she recorded 5 songs from Canadian songwriters....
Leonard Cohen: Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye + Priests
+ Sisters Of Mercy
Joni Mitchell: Both Sides Now + Michael From Mountains
Leonard Cohen always referred to Judy Collins as "The All American Girl" who introduced a Canadian poet to the world.
ps: for the record, Max (pun intended), I've got all Judy Collins' albums, including her recently released: SPELLBOUND
Brucester
