Bob was referring to a bit later when they should have moved toward TV.
Smothers didn't start till September, 1965. The Monkees started a year later - September 1966. There was a three and a half year timeframe between "Young Men..." and Smothers. He was saying that they should have moved at some point in time and then their career could have had a shot in the arm.
I hope this clarification works. Bob was referring to the fact that they were approached again about a TV show a couple of years later and turned it down. Then came the TV success of Smothers and the Monkees.
Sometimes it's all about timing...

There were television offers for the Kingston Trio, for example- Young Men In A Hurry, but Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds turned them down because having a TV series required too much time and energy. Bob Shane defended their decision since the Kingston Trio were busy performing concerts and making records. Previous Message
Last May, 2022 I bought 6 tickets on the third row... top price... $86 each... hoping to get a super fun-time lined up. A month ago we were notified that the concert had been cancelled due to health issues. At first the Fox Theatre in Tucson only refunded 90%... holding back 10% for some crazy reason. Later, after I protested, they refunded the entire amount but I am sad. I was SOOO looking fwd to seeing the guys. Bob told me one time, while hanging with Dickey, that Dickey scolded Bob for not being more active in going after television opportunities like he and Tommy did. Bob said, "He was right.!"
