I love your Magnaxov portable stereo record player. It looks terrific, and I bet the LP "Something Special", with added orchestra & chorus....
sounded real good !!!
The LP cover also gotta be one of the best NBJ pics out there.
Jay Thompson took that photograph while Nick Bob & John were vacationing in Hawaii.
Anyhow, back in 1962, when I was a kid of 10, I wanted to use the money I got from delivering The Montreal Star....
and mowing neighbours lawns, etc...to buy records.
I'd call up "Capitol Records of Canada" {on Port Royal Street here in Montreal} and ask them what was the latest album of THE KINGSTON TRIO ?
For quite a long time, I'd keep getting the same answer....
>>> Best Of The Kingston Trio <<<
Finally, one day when I phoned Capitol Records in early July of 1962, the lady who answered told me to hold the line....
she then came back to the phone saying:
>>> Something Special. It just got released today <<<
I called every record store in Montreal asking if they had "Something Special" ~> but none of them did.
I checked my wallet, which had about $10 + change...plus a few bus tickets...and then headed off to Capitol Records on Port Royal Street.
"Something Special" => the only LP I bought from Capitol Records / price: $4.20
I must've taken 15 busses {8 to Capitol + 7 going home} since I kept getting lost {long story}....
but the Bus Drivers kept giving me "transfers" so I never paid more than 2 bus tickets in total !!!
<<>> SPEAKING OF BUS DRIVERS <<>>
Our guys who drive in Montreal must've enrolled in Bob Newhart's School For Bus Drivers.
I noticed every time a woman got on the bus carrying packages, the Bus Driver would hit the accelerator...
then hit the brake...then hit the accelerator again...then the brake...
Those poor ladies would end up spinning all the way to the back of the bus !!!
