Billie Joe MacAllister's German Cousin?
I am often amused with changes in the title and lyrics of popular American songs recorded in foreign languages. Having taken German in both high school and college, I usually focus on these versions. Ken's latest SASS featuring Bobbie Gentry's hit seemed like a good target. There were a number of German language versions of the song. This one describes the basic outline of Bobbie G's but with a few of those amusing twists
[including the certainly nontypical German name]:
Nachruf auf Luigi Thomasetti [= Obituary of Luigi Thomasetti] by Julianne Werding
During dinner, Poppa points to a picture in the newspaper about a young man who, suffering from "lovesickness", takes his own life. Mom says "Isn't that Luigi Thomasetti from Möllerstraße Numero 10?" [Germany's Choctaw Ridge?]. After more derogatory remarks by both parents, the young lady throws down her silverware and gets up to leave the house for good. Her final remarks are:
"Luigi Thomasetti was the greatest for me,
And I know well what I am saying, for I loved this man."
