Likely, it was originally a tenor or a plectrum banjo that was used for recording "Sweet City Woman." The plectrum is just a 5-string banjo without the 5th string so if a player removes the 5th string, or can muffle or avoid hitting the 5th string when strumming, a 5-string banjo can also be used.

The Stampeders were my hometown’s band, but I always assumed the banjo was a tenor - never realized it was a 5-string.
