I think we all know how much the Weavers influenced the Kingston Trio ('We used to do all of their stuff'). This influence is mentioned in a book I have just finished:Wasn't That a Time: The Weavers, the Blacklist, and the Battle for the Soul of America'. The book is perhaps a bit hagiographic but nevertheless informative about the era and helps to explain why the Trio early on avoided some overtly political material. It also puts' Ken's mention of 'fighting Communism' into context.
Just speculation on my part but just think of how ripe the present time is if the "Folk Era" of old could somehow happen now! The old themes of the "Folk Era" such as Civil Rights, Equality, and fighting Communism, are now being recycled in real-time except now instead of fighting Communism to save our freedoms, Americans are fighting each other, politically and physically, to establish what each side thinks America should be. Your thoughts are welcomed!
