Re: A Familiar Trio Melody
Sure, Jim. I always enjoy your essays and commentary.
Ken – Rick is right. I heard this Brahms Symphony not long ago and recognized “White Snows of Winter.” I thought I was on to something but, as usual, Jim Moran had this figured out long before I did. Shane and Drake actually had wanted to include Brahms on the Album as a songwriter credit, but Capitol wouldn’t let them. Here’s a link to Jim’s “Comparative Video 101” on the “White Snows of Winter.” http://compvid101.blogspot.com/2012/12/shane-and-drakes-white-snows-of-winter.html
Thanks for linking this December 2012 post, Meade. I had thought to do so myself but have been busy with end-of-the-semester stuff. Like most of my Comparative Video pieces, it's more of a personal essay than a research project, though a) it features legitimate quotations from both Bob Shane and Tom Drake, the co-writers of the piece, and b) I challenge anyone to say that when they see that it was covered by hard-rockin' REO Speedwagon they would be anything other than taken aback by the lyrical beauty and tasteful orchestral scoring that the band gave to a genuinely lovely rendition of this great song.
