Hi Paul, A USB-equipped turntable has a built-in preamp and analog-to-digital converter, and comes with software that installs on a computer. The whole shebang enables the playing of vinyl LPs and 45s into a computer for listening through the computer's speakers or headphone jack. Most importantly, the software enables the generation of digital wave and mp3 files that can then be installed on a cellphone or iPod type device for convenient listening anywhere. The turntable also usually has an analog output for hooking it into a conventional stereo system. You can purchase a USB-turntable just from any store that sells audio equipment such as Best Buy, Crutchfield, or a local stereo shop.
