The Trio’s version of “Dorie” on their “…from the Hungry i” album sounds very much like “Dodi Li” from the Bear Family recording except it was sung with English lyrics.
According to Wikipedia’s information on the “The Kingston Trio” album.
“During these same sessions, the trio recorded ‘Dodi Li’ which was left off the album. It later appeared on ...from the Hungry i as ‘Dorie’. ”
Thanks for your post Bob. It's nice to hear the Trio's Yiddish version.
Theodore Bikel recorded his version in 1956.
Greetings all. Does anyone remember the KT performance of DODI LI ? Its not on an album but is included in the Bear Family set, and can be heard on You Tube. The Bear Family notes indicate that it was taped at a club date in 1958, presumably in San Francisco. This is a hard driving performance, sung in Yiddish by Nick, and to me is emblematic of the Guard trio at its finest. Dave's driving banjo, Nick's flailing tenor backed by Bob's hard charging rhythm challenge even Buck's capabilities.
If you can, have a listen and recall the early days of the group on the cusp of its career before they became a household name.
