Thanks George for your explanation about not using “damn”. When introducing the song, Bob used to say that Capitol brought the Trio back into the studio to substitute a guitar strum for the word so it could be played on AM radio back in the day. I think he was having some fun with the audience, right?
Hi Curt et al.........Apologies for this belated comment. Greenback Dollar is one of many songs we do or do not program for any specific concert. We probably do it less frequently than others, probably because I performed the song almost every night for 41 years. But when we perform it, there's a fun story that we tell about the un-named co-writer of the song. He's a friend of ours, by the way, and is not at all bitter about not having been named along with Hoyt Axton and Ken Ramsey.
As to why we don't say "damn," there are two reasons for not saying it. First, when I heard this song and loved it in 1963, it was the KT version in which that word had been removed. I thought it was more powerful in its insinuation than had the word been used. Second, it's always fun to hear audience members shouting "damn" in that second of silence.
