Re: From our friend Maurizio in Italy..........WoW !!!
Mauricio, I know what you mean about a lifelong dream of a real Vega. I had a 1964 or so Ode longneck that I used for years. Then about twenty years ago, I walked in to my local music store for strings. The owner knew I played banjo and wanted to show me something. That something was a 1963 Vega Seeger. It belonged to a kid who went to Vietnam and never came back. I went and did come back. His father, a then elderly gentleman had held onto the banjo and some other instruments for years, as he couldn't part with them, as they had been his sons. He finally decided to put them up for sale. I didn't have the money, but my family, most of us musicians, had been using this music store for many years and we were friends. So I asked the owner if I could give him something to hang onto it for me, and I'd do a layaway for the banjo. He agreed, and a few months later, I walked out of the store, with a Vega Seeger of my own in hand. I still have it of course. And in fact, Pete Seeger himself has played it. I once took it with me when I was going to see Pete at a performance, hoping to get the head signed. I managed to meet Pete. He was always hanging around talking to fans, regaling them with stories etc. I asked him to sign it and he did. The he asked me "Mind if I doodle around on it a bit?" Are you kidding me? Go ahead and play it. And he did. And I still have a smile on my face from that night whenever I think about it!
Thank you again, Rick... you're very kind. I tried my best to replicate Dave's picking... not an easy task for an italian trio fan who never happened to see the Trio live!
It's a rather recent (2000?) Deering/Vega Pete Seeger model... I bought it from Paul Marks who sold it before moving to Greece. I wish I had a REAL Vega P.S.... it was the dream of my life but this is the closest i could come to it
I also have a good Gibson long neck (like John Stewart who I think he used it on # 16 and New frontier)... Karen Gunderson of the New Christy minstrels (she was famous in Italy... for her voice and her beauty) bought it for me from a guy in California i could not pay the way he wanted (maybe Paypal wasn't around yet then)
If you want to know more, just ask and I'll do my best to answer (I must admit I know little about my instruments... all I care for is to play them!)
Nice Job clawhammering Mauricio! What kind of banjo is that? I can see it's a long neck.
He says that he's OK...but a lot of people there aren't.
So, we're sending out all of our prayers to them.
