Recently, I got hold of The New Christy Minstrels Ramblin' album on CD ("Expanded Edition" featuring 13 bonus tracks added).
Superb job by Gordon Anderson, CEO of Real Gone Music. Gordon used to be in charge of the music catalog for Collectors Choice Music before forming Real Gone Music.
* Note: Barry McGuire made a name for himself when he took the lead vocal in the Minstrels' "Green Green" hit song.
Later came Barry's sensational solo: "Eve of Destruction".
Great list Larry. The only one I would add would have been John Denver. Except for Leonard Cohen, I have pretty much every album by every one of the artists/groups on your list. In fact, I have over 19,000 .mp3 files of folk music in my collection. A lifetimes worth!
Agreed! Thank You, Rick. I gotta ask, whoever made up that list of 15 Top Folk Singers, what in hell were they smoking?
Besides, I made up my own list. And I gave up smoking a dozen years ago.
That's why I couldn't enjoy Bradley Cooper's "Maestro" movie.
For what it's worth, here's my list of the 15 Top Folk Singers (off the top of my head):
1 - The Kingston Trio
2 - Peter Paul & Mary
3 - The Brothers Four
4 - The Chad Mitchell Trio
5 - The Limeliters
6 - The Weavers / Pete Seeger
7 - The New Christy Minstrels
8 - Ian & Sylvia
9 - Early Bob Dylan
10 - Joan Baez / Judy Collins / Joni Mitchell
11 - Simon & Garfunkel
12 - The Highwaymen
13 - Gordon Lightfoot
14 - Leonard Cohen
15 - The Rooftop Singers / Erik Darling / Tom Paxton
I call bullshit! The Trio has been credited with starting the folk boom and they come in at #11? I can't agree with that. Probably wouldn't have heard of most others in the list, except for maybe Pete Seeger or the Weavers, had it not been for the Trio.
