We all seem generally to be able to get to where we want to go (except for my money in the maze of freeways and our Golden Gate toll bridge in the Bay Area, which remain bewildering), but exactly how we do it if we're not Bay Area residents remains something of a mystery.
And just to make sure we stay relevant and as a comment to your posting - Dewey Bunnell of the band America and composer of "Ventura Highway" was like myself a new arrival in southern California about a year before my June 6, 1973 arrival. His song hit the charts some time in summer of 1972 but was still getting some radio airplay on top 40 stations in the LA area in '73- and in a moment of harmonic convergence, in my first trip up the coast to explore the marvelous beauty of Santa Barbara, when the 101 passed through Oxnard, the freeway signs began to read "Ventura Highway." I imagine Bunnel saw exactly the same signs.
