Well, Denny won't be dropping by any time soon since he died in 2007. Michelle has talked about her affair with Doherty both in her recently published book and in the Rolling Stone interview following its publication. This bit from Yahoo includes a short version of the story.

And it's currently sunny and 68 degrees here in southern California, and I'm sorry to see that groundhog Punxsutawney Phil did indeed see his shadow this year and you may have six weeks more of ice and snow, unfortunately. But it will make the spring all the more welcome and beautiful when it does arrive.
I read somewhere, I forget where, the Mamas & Papas broke up due to John Phillips' wife Michelle and Denny Doherty having an affair. Wouldn't it be funny if it happened on a Monday? Funny is probably the wrong word but unless Michelle or Denny visit this website I needn't worry. Meantime, it's cold in Boston and here I am dreamin' of California.
Watching the Grammy's last night I realize how much has changed since The Kingston Trio were selling albums by the millions back in the 1960's. I hardly recognize our world anymore but as Bob Dylan noted: The Times They Are A-Changin'. And how!
The Kingston Trio inspired so many vocal bands from The Brothers Four to Peter Paul & Mary and a whole bunch of others, including The Journeymen. John Phillips and Scott McKenzie and Dick Weissman recorded three albums for Capitol Records but with all their talent, those records didn't sell.
John eventually formed a folk-rock band who called themselves The Mamas & The Papas. They lasted a few years but they managed to have a few hits:
1) Monday, Monday
2) California Dreaming
3) Go Where You Wanna Go
4) Twelve Thirty
5) Creeque Alley
I always assumed that when Dave Guard left The Kingston Trio, John Phillips would have been his replacement. John had two strikes against him. Too young (since the KT played many nightclubs) and John couldn't play banjo.
So John Phillips formed The Journeymen but when that fell apart he got hold of Michelle Gillium, Cass Elliot, and Denny Doherty, and formed The Mamas & The Papas.
Uh-oh, today is Monday! :>)
