What if ?"
It couldn't have happened because they could never have worked it out. In my view, the problem was more than Dave's desire for Nick and Bob to study music or his anger over the missing publishing money. I see Dave as the first casualty of the '60s. The three of them had wanted to make a living as professional musicians, and in a very short time, they had achieved fame and wealth far greater than they could have ever dreamed. For whatever reasons, Dave seemed to find that commercial success wasn't what it was cracked up to be, and he bailed out. Maybe he just wasn't willing to pay the price for success (i.e., the grind of 250+ concerts and three albums per year). Note that for the rest of his life, he never really seemed to focus on commercial success. He never lost his love for music but he didn't seem to court fame. As for PP&M, part of their fame is due to their association with the political causes of the '60s, and that wasn't going to happen with the Trio, even if Dave had remained. Don't forget that he was the guy who vetoed performing at JFK's inauguration.
