I was looking through one of my bookshelves last week (in my downsizing effort) and ran across the program we received when my wife and I saw The Kingston Trio in concert with the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra Sept. 21, 2003. Bob Shane, George Grove and Bob Hayworth (along with Paul Gabrielson) sounded terrific. It was most interesting to hear the Trio with orchestral back-up. It was also the first time I had ever attended a concert in a large and well designed concert hall. The sound was magnificent! My wife and I wandered around awhile after the concert and then went back to our hotel. On the elevator going back to our room, it stopped and George Grove got on the elevator. I said something to the effect of “Holy Moly, George Grove! We just saw your concert Mr. Grove and it was great!” The first words out of his mouth were “Please call me George”. We didn’t have time to chat because he got off the elevator just a few floors away. But, what a nice guy. All in all, it was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
