Back around '63 or so an article in one of the weekly news magazines...Newsweek, Time, or maybe Business Week?, said they got $6,000 or 60% of the gross take for a concert and I believe it said John Stewart got something like $40,000/year + more on somewhat of a sliding scale. Tickets would have likely been something like $2.50-$4.50+/- then.
As to your comment about too much money was rolling in, anyone have any idea how much the Trio brought in for their concerts? On average? How much they personally made? How wealthy were they actually? And what did they get for each album they cranked out? I'd never have asked this while Bob was still with us, but now that the Trio no longer exists, I'm asking.
Interesting question, gabby. I think Werber may have been the key. He could probably have cooled things down if he had wanted to. The problem was that Dave was at odds with Werber over the publishing money and his belief that management wasn't watching the store. That threatened Werber's position, and once that happened, Werber no longer had a motive to keep Dave in the group. Dave probably overplayed his hand, too. He seems to have thought that the Trio couldn't go on without him.
Let's also not forget that Werber and Capitol were working these guys like dogs with the 250 or so shows a year and three albums per year. It sounds as if the guys needed some time off to regroup, but that wasn't going to happen. Too much money was rolling in.
