Hello Les - I'm sorry to say that I can contribute very little to your knowledge about the Depression in Calgary. I attended Central Collegiate in Calgary from 1957 until 1959 graduation, and was happy to have a chance to go back in 1963 to appear with my friend Joni at The Depression.
Joni and I had become acquainted earlier in Saskatoon at the Louis Riel Coffeehouse, where my group The Talismen were playing, and we became fast friends. I believe that it's documented that Joni's first paying gig was the Louis Riel, and that she was influenced by our little group.
My few memories of the Calgary Depression was that I was billetted with Peter Elbling in his nearby digs, I was not very well-received, despite having just appeared on national TV in Canada on CTV's special "Something To Sing About", along with Ian and Sylvia and the Travellers, and one of my old high school friends, Rick Hansen and his wife Brenda, actually came out to see me.
Sorry that I couldn't be of more help, but my main venues in that time period were the Fourth Dimension Coffeehouses in Regina and Winnipeg, the Louis Riel and The Blue Grotto in Saskatoon.
Regards ...... Glen
