Interesting thoughts Max. I can see the logic. I've never considered myself a "Folkie", rather a Kingston Trio fan. SOME of the stuff our guys did was folk, much of it was not...it's all good.
Sooo many musical genres own me...not interested in labels/category etc.
From the business end of things, I can see why the record companies do what they do, they're in the biz of selling their recordings.
That was then, I don't have a clue how things are done now. TC
As per usual....
Extremely well said...Jim.
I believe it all goes back to the label that Capitol put on the Trio.
"Now..You're folk singers!"
The Trio's albums were in the folk section of record stores.
This branded them for life.......
Even though Bob has always insisted that they were NOT folk singers.
I believe that one of the reasons why the Trio was more successful than the other "folk" groups was because their songs varied greatly....there was something for everyone.
"Folk Music" no longer appeals to me.
I belive that the Trio's being branded as "Folk Singers" turned out to be the kiss of death.
If I had been George and Rick....I would not have embraced Folk. I would have run as far from it as possible.
I'd want to be the new Association instead.
I would use the banjo on the last song in the world that anyone would expect a banjo to be used on.
I don't want to hear Dark As A Dungon...
Or any of that sad stuff.
To me...most folk music is very depressing.
