Re: Jerry still in the Diamonds?
Beau, Everything you said is correct! You have really done your homework on this stuff! Impressive!
By 1961, no original Diamonds were left. By the end of the '50s, Dave Sommerville (lead singer), the last original member from the Mercury Records Diamonds, had been joined by 3 new members. Dave was the only founding member left. He was replaced by Jim Malone in '61.
Through the years, there were offshoot groups, two of them led by 2nd-generaton Diamonds, Mike Douglas, John Felton, and one by one of Douglas' recruits Glenn Stetson (Stetson's story is quite a saga, in itself - lawsuits were involved). The current trademark group is a continuation of the John Felton group, and is led by one of Felton's band members, Gary Owens. Of the original 7 Diamonds, Phil Levitt (founding member) and Evan Fisher (2nd generation) are still living.
The current trademark holders allowed the original four to appear on the PBS oldies specials. In fact, I believe Dave Sommerville did at least one appearance with them before he died, if memory serves. I don't know if this was agreed upon in legal documents, or if the current group was being gracious (I was told by Owens that it was the latter).
If any of this is incorrect, I'm sure Jerry will correct it!
