Re: The KT from the beginning.
Well put Suzy. I too started have listening to the old Nick, Bob and Dave albums. Beautiful music! Period.
It's been a long time since I listened to any KT..outside of Born at the Right Time and Bloodlines. The other stuff just didn't interest me as it had too much pain for me to listen to.
So, I put it all away for almost a year. Then I got to thinking about something Mike Marvin said...In the early months of their takeover of the name, Marvin made his argument that "yeah, we are not George, Bill and Rick but the Trio started out rough too" or something to that effect.
The argument being that the Marvinettes lack of talent really is better than the "Opera" stylings of GBR(His words as I recall) and in the spirit of the original line up...
In other words, "mediocre is the new good"...(my phrasing not theirs)
So, I decided to listen to that first album of Bob, Nick and Dave..to see if they really were just average...
Nope..they weren't...Yes, their voices weren't perfectly tuned as on At Large or String Along..but their voices crackled with energy...and mediocre could not sell "Tom Dooley" like those boys did...the nuance of Shane's voice to go from that powerhouse "Saro Jane" to being the sympathetic killer on "Tom Dooley" is amazing...and this is just their first album!
The collection covers so many styles and they seem to cover them with ease...The early version of "Sloop John B" carries a mournfulness that later versions don't have...all three carry it well...Dave's intense lead on "Fast Freight" and Bob and Nick's amazing harmonies just make that song soar....
I cannot fathom the Marvinettes approaching this kind of artistry.
All of the line ups of the KT had large shoes to fill..and all did them proud...except now....
So, for as long as I can, I will defend the early KT recordings as being timeless, amazing and worthy of appreciation....
The tact this current line up of tearing down their predecessors shows a complete lack of class, respect and taste...
