Mary Adelaide was the first People's Princess. The people adored "Fat Mary" and her popularity exceeded her cousin Victoria's popularity at times. Mary Adelaide had many charitable interests and involved all of her children, but especially her daughter, Victoria Mary, in many of her philanthropic efforts. Neither she nor Franz had any financial sense and had to go abroad at one point in order to escape creditors.
Franz lived in his wife's shadow. He spent most of his married life decorating the family's various homes and trailing behind Mary Adelaide, eventually developing dementia. HIs daughter arranged for him to be cared for after Mary Adelaide's death.
