1554 - Lady Jane Grey also known as The Nine Days Queen was executed. Jane gave a speech on the scaffold: ”Good people, I am come hither to die, and by a law I am condemned to the same. The fact, indeed, against the Queen's highness was unlawful, and the consenting thereunto by me: but touching the procurement and desire thereof by me or on my behalf, I do wash my hands thereof in innocency, before God, and the face of you, good Christian people, this day.” She then recited Psalm 51 (Have mercy upon me, O God) in English.

She was used as a pawn by her father-in-law, who used his influence with Edward VI to change the succession as set forth in Henry VIII's will. The Duke of Northumberland wanted to be the power behind the throne. Poor Jane paid the price for his arrogance and greed.
