2017 - King Michael of Romania died. In 1947 he was forced to leave the country, his properties were confiscated, and he was stripped of his Romanian citizenship. In March 1948, Michael denounced his abdication as illegal, and contended he was still the rightful King of Romania. 1948 he married Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma. During exile, Michael worked as farmer, pilot, entrepreneur and stockbroker.
He retired from public life in March 2016, following the death of his wife. His eldest daughter Crown Princess Margareta took on the majority of his duties. The King died at his residence in Switzerland aged 96. He was buried with full state honors in the Mausoleum of the Royal Family, on the grounds of the Curtea de Argeș Cathedral in Romania alongside his wife.

Last night I was looking at boyhood photos of Mihai and Philip. They were very close as children. They both overcame huge difficulties and were very different men, but I think the friendship remained.

Prince Philip was Margareta's Godfather, so I would the friendship did survive.
