Living in Tudor times

I've been going thru my collection of books about Henry VIII and his wives. I think it was a tough time working in any of the palaces. I love to bake and cook, but I don't think they'd want me in a kitchen. I'd enjoy being a seamstress even tho they didn't have sewing machines or steam irons. I like needlepoint and crewel work so could earn my keep.

I would be a brewer in the Tudor era. It was common for lower-class women to supplement the family income by brewing beer. The best female brewers worked for noble or even Royal families and would be listed in multiple households' expense books. That money could add up quickly. Too bad witchcraft came to be associated with women brewers at the same time monasteries began to move into the beer and ale market.

I guess the water in London wasn't safe to drink so most people drank beer or wine. I haven't seen any mention of tea. When did that become popular?

Tea first arrived in Britain in the 1650s, when the East India Company imported it from China. It didn't exist in the 1500s (16th Century) early 1600s (17th Century).

I assume you mean that it didn't exist in the UK. Tea has definitely been around for several millenia in China.

This is a bit O/T, but I toured the Guinness Brewery in Dublin in the 70s. It is located the bank of the Liffey River. They joked that they used the river water for their ale.
