We lost two of the most wonderful people. You are still greatly and sadly missed Ma'am and Sir.

I know you know Philip passed away in April 2021 and not September, but I love the photos and the idea that they were reunited on this day.

It is interesting to see the photo of President Kennedy and his wife on their official visit. According to reports I've read Queen Elizabeth was not happy about them coming. She made things difficult. Jackie had asked that several famous authors and artists be invited to the palace while they were there. They weren't. There was also the problem with Jackie's sister, who lived in London. She was divorced and not welcome. They got it all ironed out, but it was not a pleasant time.

Queen Elizabeth II and the DOE are truly missed. It was the end of a wonderful and historic era.

I really miss both of them. There are occasions when I'd like to be able to read the remarks of one or both.

I remember reading that, apart from the fact that both of the Radziwlls had previously been married and divorced, Lee's first husband, Michael Canfield, was widely believed to be the son of Edward, Duke of Kent and Kiki Preston, "the girl with the silver syringe", which might have made things interesting. The Queen is also said to have refused to allow the Radziwills to attend under their Polish titles, which, British protocol notwithstanding, I've always thought rather petty, if true.

I've read that the fact that Lee was divorced was a minor problem in comparison to her being married to Stanislaw Radziwill who was a member of the Polish Govt. in exile, this being at the height of the Cold War and Poland being Communist plus a staunch satellite of the Soviet Union. Stanilaw's father Janusz had been imprisoned in Russia in 1939, released and then arrested again after the War.
Both Poland and the Soviets were squawking at any inclusion of Stanislaw and Lee being included at a Palace function and put the UK Govt. plus the Queen in an awkward position.

Gossip at the time was that Lee's mother did not think Michael Canfield was rich enough. She wanted both daughters to marry "up". Jackie did, of course, when she married Onassis.

I thought it was mean not to allow Stan Radziwill to use his title. What did it really matter?

The British Crown, unlike its European counterparts, has been very particular about not allowing the use of foreign tiles without a Royal Licence to do so. In 1932 the King announced that no further Licences would be granted and His government wrote to existing title-holders asking them to forego the use of their titles.

This has not, of course, stopped foreign aristocrats and royals from using their titles socially, as the Radziwills had done. Like you, Carolyn, I think it very petty of the Queen/Palace not to invite the Radziwills under their Princely title.

John, for some reason the British Crown has always thought themselves better or above their European counterparts. I don't think they are, but I grew up in the US where I've always believed we are created equal. You may be better looking and have more money than I, but that doesn't make you better.

I'm sorry. I should have started a new topic. I was reminded of the dinner for the Kennedys when I saw that photo. I won't post any more about the event.

Those are so beautiful.She was intensely loyal to her staff and they to her.
