Prince Michael of Greece has died

Prince Michael of Greece, who was Prince Philip's first cousin, has died at the age of 85.

The royal, who was a renowned writer and historian under the name Michel De Gres, passed away at hospital in Athens , it was announced today.

The last remaining grandson of George I with a lineage to the House of Bourbon through his mother's side of the family, is set to be buried in the Greek capital on Thursday.

He was well known for his devotion to his wife Marina Karella and his turbulent personal life which saw him tragically lose his father at the age of just one.

Despite being an acclaimed painter and sculptor, as Marina was not a member of the royal family he had to give up his rights to the Greek throne in order to marry her in 1965.

Sad news. I have his book 'The Royal House of Greece' which is a fascinating read.

Wouldn't he have written using the name Michel de Grèce (sounds like Grès)? Grès was a fashion designer.

What an incredible group of first cousins. In some ways, I think they're more interesting than the British cousin group who were grandchildren of Victoria.

I think it would be "de Grece", I've never seen it as Gres.
I have his book Crown Jewels and it's an excellent book, his research of his subject is meticulous. Michael wrote a blog for many years, it included not only Royal histories, but he wrote on many other subjects as well, it was an interesting read.
I remember Michael said that when his mother died, the Count and Countess of Paris literally took him in as of their own along with their 11 children. Countess Isabelle supposedly stated, "We have 11 children, what's one more to love."

It came to me that there were almost no foreign cousins. I hope they do a memorial later on as they did for Constantine.
