One of Camilla's great-great-grandmothers

A history fan has revealed how the Queen Consort sent him a personal letter after he found a photo of her great-great grandmother and sent it to her at Clarence House.

Camilla, 75, wrote back to Adam Simpson-York, from Ipswich, to thank him for sending her the photograph of her relative Edrica Faulkner, penning a typed letter with her handwritten signature on it.

Not much is known about her, except she was apparently the daughter of an itinerant painter, but she married Hugh Morton Shand in 1857 and they had three sons, including Alexander Faulkner Shand, Camilla's great grandfather.

Well, the "itinerant painter", whose name is Joshua Wilson Faulkner, rates a Wikipedia page which informs us he exhibited at the Royal Academy. His elder brother, Benjamin Rawlinson Faulkner, was also a portrait painter. He, too, rates a Wikipedia page.

I think Edrica looks like she's trying not to smile! That's a lovely photo and, judging by her dress, the Shands were rather well off!

Edrica's father's works are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Met? Hardly "itinerant"!

It's easier for the reporter to just label Edrica's father itinerant, rather than even doing a basic Google research/Wiki research.
Quite a difference between Joshua and his brother Ben's noted works and the DM's descriptions.

I think the author used wikipedia, started with Camilla and then worked backwards on her father's ancestors.

The first mention of Edrica occurs on the page for Alexander Faulkner Shand. From there, instead of clicking on the link for Joshua Wilson Faulkner, the reporter clicked the link for Hugh Morton Shand.

And on Hugh Morton Shand's page we find the words:

In 1857, he married Edrica Faulkner (1822–1890), daughter of an "itinerant portrait painter". And tsk, tsk, the source for that info is Charles & Camilla: portrait of a love affair written by Gyles Daubeney Brandreth.

So sloppy research by the DM reporter and possibly Brandreth.

Does it say anywhere that the "history fan" sought and obtained permission from Camilla to publish the story and her Private & Confidential letter?
That concerns me.

Yeah, still sloppy research on the reporter's part and if true, on Brandreth's part. The phrase concerning the "itinerate" painter is put as such as to sound extremely snobbish, as if Camilla's family, her past family were "common".
Nellie, I didn't see in the article where the young guy sought/obtained permission from Camilla to publish her letter. I may have missed it, though.
You know I've read some stories concerning Catherine having written a letter to I think a family and it was published and nothing was mentioned that her permission was obtained, but perhaps it was and it wasn't included in the article. I don't know, I'll be honest.
