Lady Susan Hussy and racism

I can't remember, but was Lady Susan one of the women the Queen assigned to help Harry's wife learn the ropes?

The woman has just given a great deal of legitimacy to the claims Harry and his wife have made about racism within the monarchy.

While I am not excusing any type of racist behavior that occurs, I feel sorry for Lady Susan and many other elderly people who do not know about today's new norms, where asking someone where you are from is now considered racist. Not to mention a societal norm where everyone posts every single conversation online immediately after it happens.

Asking people where they are from isn't racist.

Refusing to accept the answer because it doesn't align with who you consider to be British or American or French or whatever, is.

Bingo. Lady SUsan has just handed the Sussexes a golden--in their eyes--opportunity to attack the monarchy and Harry's family. It's also going to take a bit away from William and Catherine's visit to the US.

So a big Sussex supporter who has supported their claim of racism in the Royal Family attends a reception hosted by Queen Camilla, gets into a conversation with Lady Susan Hussey and instead of repeating she was born in the UK and is of British Nationality and changing the subject, she blows it up into a conveniently huge controversy right before the Wales travel to the US and the Netflix film. Set up, set up, set up.
I agree with Jessie Lady Susan Hussey's generation don't understand wokism and the fact that now you can't say or ask anything without being accused of something.

The comments following the article so far that I've read are saying the same thing as Jessie and supportive of Lady Susan as to not being aware of the woke culture at her age.

And the comments made when Harry made his racist remarks about ragheads and pakis thought that Harry had said nothing wrong.

It is a sticky situation. You have to be so careful what you ask and how you ask it. As a genealogist, I am always interested in a person's ethnicity when I encounter an unusual name. But I always explain that I am interested in genealogy and ask about the background of their name. Perhaps I better stop doing that. For what it's worth, I don't think I have ever asked that of people of any color. Well maybe Asian or Pacific Islanders.

From what you have described, I don't see a problem. As you said, how you ask and including why you are interested is key. And backing off if the person indicates reluctance to answer or otherwise exhibits any uncomfortableness about the question.

I admit I've asked about people's names and nationalities. It's led to some great conversations about cultures, the US, families, etc. I find most people want to talk about their lives and backgrounds. But if folks don't want to talk about that stuff, I change the conversation to the weather, or sports, or whatever.

I'm trying to figure out just what Lady Susan Hussey was thinking. She's a skilled and experienced courtier who should have known better. I hope she's apologized to the King and Queen and even moreso to the woman she treated so horribly.

Then people of Lady Susan's generation shouldn't be working at the Palace if they don't understand that making assumptions about where a person was born, based on their skin color, their accent, their manner of dress, etc, is a form of bigotry.

And surely people of all ages should be able to figure out that one does not badger guests by repeatedly asking a question until one is satisfied with the answer. It's rude and has nothing to do with wokeness.

I doubt it was a set-up. Lady Susan initiated the conservation and picked the wrong woman to quiz about her ethnicity. The fact that her victim has shown support for Harry's wife doesn't change the fact that Lady Susan was guilty of rudeness at best, racism at worst.

I wonder if this is where the claims of racism at the palace came into play by the Sussexes. I can see perhaps Lady Hussey made the same or similar remarks to Meghan or maybe she is the one who asked the infamous skin color question about Archie. If this is the case, I can see Harry demanding the late Queen sacking Lady Hussey and HM refusing to do so.

I just saw the video where Ms. Fulani says Lady Susan Hussey reached out and moved her hair so she could read her name tag. What? You don't do that with anyone. That's just rude. And then to add all the other rude behaviors? No. Just no.

The whole situation was handled terribly by Ms. Fulani and Lady Susan. There was a lack of tact and etiquette by both. Lady Susan should not have touched the other woman's hair to read her nametag and Ms. Fulani should have politely stated that Lady Susan could have asked her name and she would have told her and rather than move her hair. As I said if Lady Susan kept up the questions of where she "was from" then Ms. Fulani could have tried changing the subject and if that didn't work, then politely excuse herself from the conversation. Ms. Fulani should have had a quiet conversation with one of the Palace staff in attendance explained the situation. I'm sure we've all had sticky conversations, we all try to handle it the best we can, both women didn't handle it well.
In my old neighborhood and now my new one, I have neighbors from Asia, Africa and Mexico and I love to learn about the countries, cultures as well as the person's life. I've never had anyone offended, but one has to be attuned to the other person's answers and posture, if someone doesn't want to volunteer info then drop it.

I'm curious if Lady Susan has done this before with women/men of color in all her years of service? In other words, was this one off or has this been ongoing and no one has brought such action to light until now? We don't know or will likely know.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry competed in a friendly game of table tennis as the Duchess made a surprise appearance in a trailer for the Invictus Games.

The 80-second video features athletes who will be competing in the upcoming sporting event, which will be held in Dusseldorf in September 2023.

To promote tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies going on sale today, the Invictus Games' social media team shared the video on Twitter - where it was promptly reposted by Finding Freedom co-writer Omid Scobie.

Archie Mountbatten-Windsor has been pictured on a video call with his mother Meghan Markle and grandmother Doria Ragland, in a photo shared by an academic who claims she's writing a book on 'racism and the British Monarchy'.

Professor Duchess Harris, who specialises in American studies and feminism, shared a screengrab of the call to Twitter today, showing a three-year-old Archie sitting on his mother's lap in a rare appearance.

The caption read: 'I would love to invite you to be a part of my next book project: Racism and the British Monarchy: A Meghan Markle Reader. Co-Edited by Duchess Harris and Julie Schwietert Collazo.'

I think Tewa Lascelles attended the late Queen's Jubilee service in 2012. His mother was part Native American. He's 45th in line to the throne and I think he lives in the US. I doubt he'd have anything to contribute to a dialogue about racism and the Royal Family.

'Racist' comments made by Prince William's godmother are a 'disaster' for him and Kate as they head to the US today for their first trip in eight years, PR experts said today.

Buckingham Palace has been left reeling by the incident.

Whether it was unacceptable but unintentionally offensive, or malice – and everyone I have spoken to, including those who know Lady Susan, stresses it was the former – it is a sucker punch to the Royal Family’s attempts to project a modern monarchy.

It is why they moved so quickly to acknowledge how objectionable the comments were, issuing a statement in little more than two hours.

It is simply not acceptable in this day and age to dismiss what was said as a generational aberration.

As one senior former palace aide told me yesterday, it would have been unthinkable for Queen Elizabeth to have ever uttered anything similar.

New photos have emerged of Meghan Markle co-hosting a 'power of women' charity benefit as William and Kate head to the US for their first trip in eight years – and hours after the Royal palace made attempts to stave off new allegations of racism.

The Duchess of Sussex, 41, jetted into the Midwest from California to be interviewed on-stage in the event billed 'The Power of Women: An Evening with Meghan'.

The 'moderated discussion' took place alongside Rabbi Sandy Sasso - the first woman ordained by the Reconstructionist Judaism movement at the Marriott Downtown Hotel in Indianapolis.

While guests were banned from taking any pictures, Meghan's friend Omid Scobie shared several snaps from the crowd to Twitter this evening - in what some have labelled a strategic PR move in the wake of Buckingham Palace's racism debacle, which is threatening to overshadow the Prince and Princess' of Wales tour of the United States.

Guests were banned from taking photos, the media was not allowed to attend, so where did Omar get the photos? There's no copyright info on them.

I've read conflicting reports about those framed photos. One said the photos were in the guests' goody bag (can one be a guest when one has paid to attend?), the other claimed that Meghan's superfans brought them to the event.

The photos inside had to have been from staff, but the photos of Meghan walking inside with her coat on, that couldn't have been by staff, they had to have been by someone attending, bystanders or press. Meghan doesn't exactly look thrilled in those photos, she looks mad.

The photos of her wearing her coat look to me like they were taken in a parking garage or similar arrival area which was not off-limits to the media or the general public. Maybe she was annoyed that the area wasn't restricted.
