William unveiled new memorial to Royal Navy submariners

The Duke of Cambridge paid tribute to the 'continued resilience' of the Royal Navy's submariners and their families as he unveiled a new memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum.

William gave a short speech on the Submarine Service during the unveiling ceremony at the Staffordshire site on Wednesday, in which he said: 'You would be hard-pressed to find a more challenging environment to serve in.'

The duke spoke of how the new monument 'harnesses in physical form the struggles this life of service can lead to', before cutting a ribbon to officially unveil it.

It's time that those men and women serving/who have served on submarines are recognized. They've been forgotten, not intentionally, but they've served, as William pointed out, in harrowing conditions.

By its nature, their work is very secretive. I agree it's time their service saw some daylight and more recognition.

By coincidence, ABC News just featured one of their defense correspondents on the US Navy's top nuclear submarine. It was fascinating, all of the crew members volunteered to serve on the vessel. Of course, the vessel's whereabouts was top secret, the news crew was not told and before the report could air, it had to be viewed and vetted by the US Navy and DOD. Martha Raddatz even stated that they were the unsung defenders for our nation.
